An Appeal to Help Bahamians in Need

Plymouth Church Emergency Response Fund

In the wake of the unimaginable devastation in parts of the Bahamas, the people of Plymouth are deeply engaged in making a difference – through all types of donations and working alongside our neighbor churches in the West Grove.

In a follow-up to Ambassador Chuck Cobb’s words in Sunday worship, we invite you to participate with other Plymouth members in making a financial contribution to our Emergency Response Fund.

For a dozen years the Emergency Response Fund has allowed us to assist others after natural disasters, with special emphasis on making personal and collaborative connections with those whom we help.  Included among our major post-storm efforts: Hurricane Dean in Jamaica (2007), the massive earthquake in Haiti (2010, 2011), Hurricane Matthew in Haiti in partnership with Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church (2017), Hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle (2018) – and now Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.

As Chuck said on Sunday, initially, our funds will be directed to New Vision Ministries, a church in Marsh Harbour in the Abacos.  Plymouth member David Winker has lived in the Abacos, and he connected us to his long-time friend, Dave Lowe, a founder of that church. Its work in helping those on the ground in the Abacos will be essential.  Other initiatives will come up for Emergency Response Fund support as the needs continue to unfold, including on-site mission work when that is feasible (as we did earlier this year in Panama City).

We expect a sizable gift from a partner church in the coming days, and we will let people know when this takes place.  We have already raised about $10,000.  Our goal is to raise an additional $20,000.  The Cobb Family Foundation is prepared to contribute half of whatever we raise up to this $20,000 – essentially an offer to match.

And so we invite you to give to the Emergency Response Fund, helping Plymouth respond to this emergency as part of our larger Christian mission.

Faithfully,
