Blankets for Babies

In Spring 2015, Plymouth Preschool moms, Leah Jayanetti and Elizabeth Simonton, approached Plymouth’s Let’s Stitch Again! group and asked if they would be interested in knitting and crocheting blankets for premature babies who are in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at South Miami Hospital. Leah and Beth are members of the board of ICU Baby, a nonprofit that provides support for families with a baby in the NICU. The Plymouth Stitchers jumped right in and a new Plymouth ministry was born.

Plymouth member, Dr. Rodney Howell, arranged for Plymouth Stitchers and ICU Baby board members to tour the NICU at Holtz Children's Hospital at Jackson Medical Center.

We learned that about 70% of the families with NICU babies in care at Holtz Children’s Hospital are indigent and in need of various kinds of support while their child is in the NICU. The trip to the NICU inspired some Stitchers to make baby caps, and it connected ICU Baby to this hospital.

In November 2015, the Plymouth Stitchers presented ICU Baby with the first stack of blankets and caps for these babies - with many more to come. These items, each with a tag saying, “Made by a member of Plymouth Congregational Church”, will be given to every new family in the NICU as long as we can keep stitching!

The Blankets for Babies ministry has grown and now includes participants who are Plymouth members, Plymouth Preschool parents and friends of Plymouth. To participate in this meaningful ministry, please contact Lynn Bunis @ Plymouth will provide you with yarn, patterns, helpful hints and personal instructions, if requested.
